Vietnam, May 22nd, 2018 - Along with the current rapid development in Vietnam, there are more and more investment growth in high-end urban buildings, important national infrastructure, trade centers, industrial zones, hotels, office buildings, banking system, insurance and the like. This creates opportunities for the development of the security equipment market, safety, protection, fire protection, rescue, which are increasingly relevant to help minimize the risks of unsafety in the buildings that are being designed and built on a daily basis.

In response to this demand, UL and the US Consulate jointly held the seminar "Working for safer buildings in smart cities" in Ho Chi Minh City on May 22, 2018. The seminar’s opening address will be done by Madam Mary Tarnowka – Consul General of The United States of America General Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, UL’s vice president for building materials and systems - Kelvin Faltin, General Director from the State Authority for Construction Quality Inspection - Ministry of Construction and Major General Doan Viet Manh - Vietnam Fire Rescue and Rescue Police Department Chief.

The seminar focused on the introduction of UL’s building inspection, fire safety, fire prevention and firefighting programs , along with presentations from leading US companies such as Honeywell and Luke Alexander with key developers, covering themes like “Safety Challenges faced by developers in Vietnam,  “Fire Extinguishment Program for Buildings”, “Building Fire Systems”, and “Integrated Security and Safety Solutions for Buildings”.

Kelvin Faltin, vice president for UL’s building materials and systems shared “The seminar demonstrated our continued commitment to promote safe living and working environments for people in Vietnam, and to work closely with the local government and manufactory to enhance overall building safety in Vietnam.”

According to Ms. Nikki Nguyen - CPO from VeraCity, 21st century, high-rise housing plays an important role in shaping the urban appearance and sustainable development trend for the city. For urban planning, tall buildings are important factors in changing the climate parameters such as radiation, temperature, lighting, wind speed, wind direction.  The construction of a high rise in an urban area creates a big change in construction density. Therefore, the number and distribution of tall buildings in urban development planning should be very careful investigated; otherwise it could lead to urban infrastructure overload - breaking the equilibrium.

According to the 2017 UL Safety IndexTM, an inaugural worldwide study quantifying the relative state of safety across 187 countries, buildings in Vietnam continue to fall short on safety standards, particularly in accidents including fire. Vietnam placed sixth out of ten ASEAN nations in terms of overall safety according to the Index, further emphasizing the need for proactive measures like vigilant building inspections to safeguard the public’s safety and help to enable business sustainability.
